Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of improving the volume or quality of traffic and  ranking to your website ( on page SEO ) , and by getting other people to link to your site ( off page SEO ).

 

Assume you were promoting a site related to ‘stop smoking’. If you type the search term ‘stop smoking’ into Google, then the sites that appear on the first page are the top 10 natural search engine listings for ‘stop smoking’ in Google. Those sites that appear would have done a great deal of serious search engine optimization to get their sites ranking highly for the key phrase stop smoking. If you are in a more competitive market, the more search engine optimization effort you need to put in.

Fundamental 1: KEYWORD RESEARCH – FREE TOOLS

Keyword research is very important because it lets you know what your target audience is looking for to find information. Once you got the information, you can carve in on your market.

 

This tool tells us what people are looking for related to stop smoking on the Internet. This tool give a rough estimates from Google, Yahoo, and MSN, as well as related keyword phrases. It is very crucial to build up a good keyword list for your optimization purposes. If you have know idea of your market, then you would not do well in optimizing your site effectively.

 

Most experts suggest that you have one main keyword phrase per page on your website and perhaps a secondary keyword phrase also. This gives the page two opportunities to rank. Any more than two phrases will dilute the effectiveness of your search engine optimization - SEO effort.

In defining a page title, you allow the search engines to know the importance of the text and assist them to read and understand your page. Heading tags play a big role in any search engine ranking. You will be amazed there are websites that just changed the H1 tag and the page has moved up multiple places in the search engine rankings.

Fundamental 3: TITLE TAGS

It is advisable to have more than just your keyword phrase inside the title as a title of just one or two words looks strange to a search engine. You should be aiming for at least 5 words in the title, even if you are only going after two of those words.

 

Just putting the title of your website in the title tags is not as effective also. The majority of people have the same title tag on every page of their website. You should optimize each page separately. At the minimum it should be the title of your article, which should include the keywords you are going after.

 

Fundamental 4: KEYWORD DENSITY

 

Keyword density means that throughout the copy you happen to use your targeted keyword phrase several times. For example, your "Stop Smoking" site may include the keyword ‘stop smoking'  15 times in the copy and HTML tags.

 

You may want to look at the keyword density of your high ranking competitor’s sites and then try to achieve something similar. It is advisable that you should aim to have a keyword density of between 2.5% to 4% for your main keyword phrase in your search engine optimization effort

 

Fundamental  5: META TAGS

 

Meta tags are HTML tags that give information describing the content of the webpage. This description is not visible to people viewing the website, but is able to be pick up by search engines.

 

These days search engines no longer really place much weighting on the meta tags as many have abused it in the past.

 

What the meta tags do achieve, is text display in search engine results. Instead of Google grabbing random text from your site, you select what words appear in Google listings by writing a meta description.

 

Writing your own description increases your chances of getting a higher click through rate because you can describe the relevancy of your site to the searcher. And a higher click through rate helps to move your website up the rankings as it tells Google that your site is relevant to what people are searching for. However do keep your description brief so that it meets Google’s maximum character allowance.

 

 

Fundamental  6: ON PAGE ANCHOR TEXT

 

This is most straightforward for search engine optimization. Anchor text is the text within a link that links to another website or another page on your site. It is very important to put the keyword phrase in your anchor text at least some of the time. This shows the search engines that, not only is the page related to the keyword phrase, but the pages the site is linked to are also related to keyword phrase, indicating your site’s importance to this topic.

 

 

Fundamental  7: INCOMING LINKS AND ANCHOR TEXT

 

If there are sites that link to you it is crucial that they use the keyword phrase you are targeting in their anchor text as this helps to increase your search engine ranking for your keywords as it further emphasizes the relevance and importance of your site.

Linking is generally very important for search engine optimization ( SEO ).
